FAQs

Mastering is the final step in music production, where the mixed track is optimised for clarity, loudness, and consistency across all playback systems.

Please have a look at this page by Abbey Road for a more detailed explanation of what is entailed and why it is so important!

Mixing focuses on balancing individual tracks (vocals, instruments, drums, etc.), while mastering finalises the entire track (after the mix has been completed) for distribution, ensuring consistent loudness and quality across all playback systems.

Mastering ensures your music has the right loudness, balance, and tonal quality, making it sound professional on streaming platforms, radio, and physical formats. It is an essential step in a professional production to give songs a clean edge and to have a better chance at being successful. It is also the final polishing move for any song! When mastering an EP or album, it also serves to balance the project with regards to tonality, loudness and more.

Send us your final mix in WAV format, ideally with no limiting or excessive compression, along with any reference tracks for the sound you’re aiming for. In addition, we’d love to hear from you what your plans are for release and a bit more about your references, so we can ensure we are able to deliver exactly what you want! Our Cape Town-based studio has rooms that are professionally treated and perfect for mastering in.

Most masters are completed within 24-72 hours, depending on the project’s complexity and revisions required. It does not take as long as mixing a song, as there are fewer channels and less automation, it does however require incredibly precise decisions and excellent hearing.
